In a back-and-forth thriller between Massachusetts Maritime Academy (Mass. Maritime) and Keene State, KSC Men’s Lacrosse was defeated by a late, but historical, run from the Buccaneers. This game had multiple lead changes and hat tricks for players on both teams.
Keene State started off with lots of possession. After multiple shot attempts, it seemed like Keene was going to find the back of the net first. However, the Buccaneers broke the stalemate with seven minutes left in the first quarter. This goal came from Buccaneer, Chilton Cabot.
Two minutes later, Mass Maritime found another goal with a finish from Quinn Mucha. The momentum quickly switched in favor of the Buccaneers at this time.
These goals might have fired up the Owls, in fact. Junior Jack Ansart got the scoring started with four minutes remaining in the first. Ansart followed his first goal with an impressive finish with 45 seconds to play in the first quarter, sending the game tied at two goals apiece after one quarter.
15 seconds into the second quarter, the Buccaneers called a timeout. This timeout became crucial as they scored off a play by Ryan McDonough just 30 seconds after the timeout.
Although the Owls had outshot the Buccaneers 13-10, Mass Maritime was more lethal in front of the net at this point. James Sullivan extended the Buccaneers’ lead to two with a rifle into the top right corner of the goal.
First-year Adam Scala kept the Owls in the game with a rocket over the goalkeeper’s shoulder to make it a one-goal game with just under twelve minutes to play in the second quarter.
After a flag on Mass Maritime, Keene State took advantage of the man-up advantage and tied the game with a goal from senior Rex Maccarini.
This game continued to stay back and forth with more goals on both sides. The game was tied at five with seven minutes left in the first half.
A long-range shot from junior Cole Ricardi put the Owls ahead for the first time of the game with six minutes left in the half.
Jack Ansart completed the hat trick off a spin move and shot coming with four minutes remaining in the half. This sent the Owls ahead by two goals.
A flurry of goals from each team in the last few minutes ended the first half 8-6 in favor of Keene State.
In the second half, Mass Maritime worked to close the lead. Quinn Mucha got his third goal of the game to score the Buccaneer’s eighth goal, now down by one.
Mass Maritime tied the game at 10 with a goal from Cooper Barrett with three minutes left in the third quarter. This completed the comeback for the Buccaneers, as they had been down three just minutes before. McDonough followed that up with a goal himself, putting Mass Maritime ahead.
In the final quarter, Mass Maritime began to extend its lead with multiple goals, putting it up three with 13 minutes left in the game.
The game finished 14-12 in favor of Massachusetts Maritime. This was the Buccaneers’ first win over Keene State in program history.
