Two weeks ago, Andrew Schott, a KSC architecture alumnus, won the ADU Design Competition held in the Keene Library.
ADU stands for accessory dwelling unit, which was the basis of the competition: Adding an additional housing unit onto an already built property.
Schott, who graduated from KSC in 2024, explained when he first became interested in architecture and his reasoning for participating in the competition.
“I joined the competition because I wanted to create something where there weren’t any limits, really,” Schott said. “My design for the competition was an addition onto an existing property. Pretty basic, a smaller house attached to the existing one.”
Schott is currently working for an architecture firm.
“I work for Bruce Hamilton Architects,” Schott explained. “The firm I work for works off of existing buildings and adding classrooms to schools.”
“I always liked to create stuff,” Schott went on. “My interest in it really sparked in high school, though.”
Schott said he wants to join more competitions going forward, as the previous ADU Design Competition was his first.
“I definitely want to do another competition like this in the future,” Schott said. “I think this is a type of building that is definitely going to be more present in the future. I would love to do more with ADU. It feels bigger than it really is. I plan on going back to school in the fall to become a licensed architect.”
