Laughter filled the Night Owl Café on Friday, Feb. 28 as Keene State’s Social Activities Council (SAC) hosted comedian Adam Grabowski.
Grabowski studied psychology in college and began pursuing a professional career in comedy after graduation. He joked about his degree in psychology and said, “The joke is when you get your psych degree, they’ll be like, ‘Here’s a degree that’ll get you far in life,’ and then they’ll yell, ‘Sike!’
“I always liked comedy as a way of connecting people and seeing how people found it interesting … It was interesting to me but then when I was funny people had more fun and wanted to be around it,” said Grabowski.
During the show, Grabowski involved the crowd and had students laughing hysterically all night.
Grabowski has performed at over 600 college campuses throughout his career, even performing at Keene State back in 2014.
“A lot of people are afraid of performing at colleges because they think they can’t be real, but you could be more real,” said Grabowski. “You can’t be offensive or foolishly stereotypical but you could definitely be more real.”
During his show, Grabowski talked about the #SAYITANYWAY campaign, “When you’re having those days when you can’t get out of bed, I want you to say it anyway because life is way too short to leave things unsaid.”
He left out bracelets with the hashtag and a message on the inside stating, “You are not alone,” for students to take at the end of the show.
Keene State College first-year Emmett Hartford mentioned his interest in comedy shows. “I saw the poster for it. I thought it would be fun. I’ve seen a lot of stand-up comedy before and I wanted something to do,” Hartford said.
Another student, junior Bekah Bailly, who attended the performance said, “He is really relevant to the Gen Z age group. He connected well with college students.”
SAC previously met Grabowski at the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA) conference. Ashleigh Moroni, president of SAC, talked about seeing his performance space at the conference.
“We were able to see a little bit of what he does,” Moroni said. “His sense of humor is very much the kind of comedy that I see a lot of students on our campus interacting with.”
The following year the council attended the conference again and Moroni wanted to introduce them to Grabowski, saying, “‘Guys, I met this guy last year, you just need to meet him! He is so funny.’”
Eric Silverstein, KSC senior and SAC weekend events coordinator, said, “I’ve been watching a lot of his stuff lately to get myself prepared for the show. He seems like he’s going to be really funny. I think it’ll be very good for all the people that come, and I think the students will enjoy it.”
