The Thorne Sagendorph Art Gallery staff cancelled the opening reception for the first of their spring exhibits, the “100 Mile Radius Juried Art Show,” on Thursday, Feb. 6 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. because of winter weather conditions.
This exhibit is biannual, showcasing pieces from artists in a 100-mile radius of Keene, according to previous reporting by The Equinox.
Around 400 people submitted pieces for the exhibit, according to Gallery Director Paul McMullan. The juror of the event was Amy Regan, who chose the pieces that were going to be featured in the exhibit, making the selections by January 14.
They announced that the exhibit was cancelled the day before the opening reception and reiterated on the originally scheduled date through posts on the Thorne Sagendorph Art Gallery’s Instagram page. Several posts in the following days each included an art piece each from the exhibit, inviting people to stop by during their hours of 12 to 5 p.m.
Along with the posts, gallery staff also sent out an email on February 5, explaining the event was cancelled because of the weather to keep those who were traveling safe. The email also stated that they “plan to have a closing reception due to the pending storm.”
According to McMullan, there were many artists planning to travel and attend the reception, so that was also a concern when making the decision to cancel.
Despite the opening reception being cancelled, the exhibit is currently on display at the gallery until March 28. The gallery will instead be hosting a closing reception for the exhibit. The date and time of this reception have not yet been announced.
