KSC Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track finished in second on Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Plymouth State Invitational, breaking their sixth and seventh school records this year.
Junior runner Kyle Thomas already held the school record in the 60-meter dash at 6.92 seconds. Thomas proceeded to not only fly by the competition but also to set a new record at 6.87 seconds. This record puts Thomas into the top 20 runners for NCAA DIII.
In addition to Thomas, sophomore jumper Caden Latulippe showed up big time on Saturday in the pole vault. Latulippe beat the ten-year-old school record of 4.00 meters by .30 meters. Latulippe’s jump of 4.30 meters put him in third place in the event.
The men’s team cleaned up against eight other teams at the event coming in second place. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute put on a show, outscoring Keene by 177. Keene State recorded 74 points on the day.
It was an overall team effort with many points coming from underclassmen. In the 5,000-meter race, KSC came in first, second and third thanks to sophomores Tyler Bolaske and Griffin Urnezis and first-year Ben Tetu. First-year Jayden Baker also won the shot put event with a throw of 13.36 meters.
The women’s team also came in second place out of the ten schools at the Plymouth State Invitational. Following suit with the men’s team, the young athletes showed up big. First-year Keely Giordano finished in first place in the sixty-meter dash with 7.97 seconds. In addition to the underclassmen, the seniors and fifth-years did their job of providing major placement points. Autumn Boisvert and Sara Christian each recorded third-place finishes.
Additionally, some of the Owls went down to Boston Friday and Saturday to participate in the John Thomas Terrier Classic hosted by Boston University. This event hosted all levels of track and field teams from around the country.
Some notable teams included the University of North Carolina, the University of New Hampshire, Harvard and Stanford just to name a few. This was one of the top events in the country.
Jake Velazquez ran in the mile. This took him just over four minutes which was a new personal best for Velazquez.
The Owls are back in action on February 8 in Middlebury, Vermont for the Middlebury track and field meet.
