Keene Fire Department (KFD) responded to a structure call on Appian Way at 1:33 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22, according to Southwestern N.H. District Fire Mutual Aid Dispatch Center logs.

Emergency vehicles occupied Madison Street and part of Appian Way in front of the Spaulding Gymnasium and Recreation Center as well as the Zorn Dining Commons.

A source at KFD said the call was regarding a potential steam leak inside of Spaulding Gymnasium. KFD responders evacuated the building and investigated the cause of the call.

Deputy Fire Chief Greg Seymour said the department was responding to “a potential ceiling fire and upon further investigation it was determined to be a severely leaking steam coil.” Seymour added that the steam was shut off and the building was returned to KSC Facilities Department for repair.

The building was deemed safe to re-occupy by KFD at 1:51 p.m.

Assistant Director of Facilities Services Colin Burdick was not immediately available for comment.
