The Keene State College Women’s Ice Hockey team has regained its win streak with a second victory against New England College (NEC) with a score of 5-3.
Playing away at The Lee Clement Arena in Henniker N.H., the Owls started the game’s first period with a protocol violation penalty for first-year forward Brianna Finke, giving NEC a power play for the first two minutes of the game.
The first period ended with a score of 0-2 against the Owls with the first two goals being scored by NEC within the first seven minutes of the game. KSC took 14 shots on goal while NEC landed the two out of 13 shots they took.
KSC had two power plays in which two shots on goal were taken in each. All four came close to a goal but were missed, and saved by the opposing goalkeeper.
The second period started off quiet from the Owls until two goals were scored within 11 seconds of each other, tying the game 2-2. The first goal for the Owls was scored at 2:44 by Finke, making it her sixth goal of the season. The second goal was scored at 2:55 by senior captain Haylee Owen, assisted by Finke, making this her fifth goal of the season.
At 7:34 NEC shot and scored a goal, breaking the 2-2 tie. With 16 shots on goal and two goals, the second period ended 2-3 for the Owls.
KSC started the final period strong and prepared to take home the win, shooting five shots on goal within the first three minutes.
Four power plays were given to the Owls this period, earning them 10 shots on goal. The Owls scored two goals in this time period. The first goal of the period at 10:33 was scored again by Finke, assisted by both first-year forward and Ellie Patrick and senior forward Paige Henault. 17 seconds later at 10:50, just as the power play ended, the second goal was scored by Owen, bringing the game to a score of 4-3.
At 18:52 the goalie left the opposing net and NEC gained another player on the ice.
The last goal that solidified the 5-3 end score was an empty net goal made by Owen and assisted by Finke.
Owen is the first in Keene State College Women’s Ice Hockey program history to score a natural hat trick by scoring three consecutive goals in the game.
The third period ended with 26 shots on goal from KSC and five shots on goal from NEC. With a grand total of 56 shots on goal for KSC and 32 shots from NEC, the game ended with a final score of 5-3, reigniting the Owls’ win streak.
The next women’s ice hockey game will be The Bagley Invitational on Friday, Jan. 3, 2025, in Castleton Vermont at the Spartan Arena.
