KSC’s annual Celebration of Lights brought students and faculty together with a display of luminaries, hot cocoa and cider and musical performances by KSC’s a capella group Chock Full O’ Notes (CFON).
The annual celebration took place in the L.P. Young Student Center’s lobby on Thursday, Nov. 21. The main display was a large collection of luminaries that were decorated by students and dedicated to people, organizations and everything else that they are thankful for.
In addition to the luminaries and snacks, Chock Full O’ Notes performed three a cappella pieces, including Ed Sheeran’s “Photograph”, LÉON’s “Falling” and Hozier’s “Movement.”
Senior and Chock Full O’ Notes President Hap Ingram said the group performed at last year’s Celebration of Lights and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to share music with the community.
“We’re so grateful for the community that comes with singing together,” said Ingram.
“We’ve all become a close-knit community through this group, one that’s a very grounding safe space. It’s a place for us to come together, have a good time, increase our musicality and then turn around and share it with the community,” added Ingram.
According to Ingram, Chock Full O’ Notes is slated to perform a larger concert on Sunday, Feb. 2 in the L.P. Young Student Center’s Mabel Brown Room.
Junior Bugzy Richards and community member AJ Coletti performed with Chock Full O’ Notes and also made their own luminaries.
Richards’ luminary was dedicated to the a cappella group.
“Singing with everyone, and having this space to express ourselves through music is one of the best parts of my week, and my luminary says ‘CFON Rules,’ said Richards.
“Chock Full O’ Notes slays, and we leave no crumbs,” added Richards.
Coletti’s luminary served as a tribute to Coletti and Richard’s mutual friend.
“My luminary is an inside joke between me, Bugzy and our mutual friend who passed away recently,” said Coletti.
“I think our friend would have definitely thought it was funny, and that’s what I wanted to do,” said Coletti.
Coletti decided to take the luminary home to honor the friend’s memory.
The event was organized by the Office of Student Involvement, and attending students were eligible to earn five Hootie Spirit Points, which are incentive points earned by attending qualifying KSC-sponsored events and can be redeemed for prizes.
Senior Coordinator of Student Involvement and Well-Being Emily Alexander said the event is meant to encourage gratitude in whatever way an individual feels drawn to.
“There are so many different and unique ways that people have interpreted gratitude, and if you look around you’ll see dedications to friends, family, pets, different clubs and so much more,” said Alexander.
“Really it’s just whatever you’re grateful for, you can express it here in the company of our community and have a good time,” added Alexander.
