For the first time in KSC history, the women’s hockey team won their first game in overtime with a 3-2 score.
The Owls played their rivals, Plymouth State University, for the second time on Nov. 2nd to get the brand new season underway.
The first period ended scoreless, with only two shots taken by KSC and 10 taken by PSU. KSC had one power play at 12:20, only managing to take one shot during the time. The Panthers had three power-plays, which resulted in 4 shots taken on goal.
The second period was a little more eventful, ending in a 1-0 lead by KSC, where first-year forward Brianna Finke scored her first goal of the game within the last three minutes, assisted by first-year forward Camden Ladzinski and sophomore forward Emily Underhill.
Throughout the period 11 more shots were taken by KSC, but none were successful. KSC had three power plays, which led to four of their shots taken, leading to Finke’s goal. PSU only had one power play this period, but was unsuccessful in scoring.
The third period was full of action, ending with a score of 2-2 and leading the teams into overtime. six shots were taken on goal by KSC, one of which was made by senior Haylee Owen without any assist. PSU fought back and made two out of their nine shots, tying the game. KSC only had one power play, which resulted in Owen’s goal, and PSU’s two power-play opportunities ended in one of their goals.
Overtime was short, only lasting 2:55 before Finke scored her second goal of the game, leading the KSC Women’s Hockey team to their first victory.
Many factors led to this victory. Keene State won 28 faceoffs against PSU, with their team only winning 25. Senior Paige Henault won 15 of those faceoffs, and first-year Ava Lantosca won 11. Sophomore #20 Emily Underhill also contributed to this number, winning two faceoffs herself.
Out of the 22 shots taken on first-yearGoalkeeper #30 Abby Tanner, only two were made by the other team, the rest were saved. This makes her save percent land at .917%.
This puts the women’s hockey team with a 1-1 record. Their next game is on November 8, where they will play against the Golden Bears of Western New England University at their home turf.
