KSC students created cards, drawings and other crafts for local veterans in honor of Veteran’s Day.
On Wednesday, Nov. 6, Alpha Sigma Phi held Cards and Crafts for Our Troops in the student center’s lantern room, an event where students could create something as a token of appreciation for veterans. There was paint, paper, colored pencils and more available for students to work with.
This is the first event of its kind that Alpha Sigma Phi has held, according to junior Austin Bartnicki, the fraternity’s vice president of service and philanthropy.
“This is a new event that I wanted to do for Veteran’s Day,” said Bartnicki. “We support a philanthropy called Homes For Our Troops, and one of the things that is cool about [them] is that they work with veterans throughout their whole lives.”
“They’re not just building houses,” continued Bartnicki. “They’re doing way, way more than that.”
All of the cards and crafts are being sent to one specific veteran, who is having a house built locally by Homes For Our Troops.
Many of the students at this event discussed their enjoyment of being able to give back to members of their community.
“I like giving back … It’s something that my family ingrained in me,” said junior Anthony Lupo.
“I was a Scout, so that helped me with patriotism,” said senior Samuel Millham. “My dad was in the military before I was born, so … any way I can help give back to the troops.”
Other students expressed having fun being able to get involved on campus and participate in campus events.
“I just like to participate in all of our events that we put up for our philanthropies,” said junior Joshua O’Neill, Alpha Sigma Phi’s vice president of communications. “As a brother, I try to go to as many as I can, especially Homes For Our Troops.”
O’Neill continued, “I had family that served in the military so it’s kind of one of the ones closer to my heart.”
“I came [to the event] because I’m part of the Community Service Club which is partnered with this,” said sophomore Samantha Goldblatt. “I’m also friends with a lot of the brothers, so it’s a nice chance to just … hang out with my friends and … do something good for the community.”
There is interest in holding another Cards and Crafts for Our Troops in upcoming years.
“If I weren’t graduating then yes … I would come back to this [event] again,” said Millham.
“Hopefully more people will come [to the event] in the following years,” said Bartnicki.
