The 2025 Grammy Awards Nominations were recently released, and KSC students have been debating if the nominations are worthy of the award.
The Grammys are an award show that happens every year that celebrates the accomplishments in the music industry. It features live performances of nominated artists. Some of the awards are Song of the Year, Best New Artist and Album of the Year.
A few of the eight songs that were nominated for the Song of the Year are “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” by Shaboozey, “Die With a Smile” by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars and “Please Please Please” by Sabrina Carpenter.
This year’s nominations were only from songs, performances and productions released between September 16, 2023, and August 30, 2024, and the decisions for the winners of the awards are made by Recording Academy members. The award decisions will be made between December 12 and January 3.
As far as the nominations go, many artists were picked for multiple awards. Beyoncé received 11 for her country project “Cowboy Carter,” making her the artist with the most nominations. Post Malone, Charli xcx, Billie Eilish and Kendrick Lamar received seven nominations a piece for their music, while Chappell Roan, Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter got six each. Jack Antonoff and Shaboozey received five each.
When it comes to the students of KSC, not many had much to say about the event itself.
“I’ve watched it before,” first-year Tagora Mortensen said. “It really depends, though. Sometimes I kind of forget about it existing, but I get happy when one of my artists I like gets nominated.”
However, the nominees themselves were debated. One that was highly approved was Kendrick Lamar, and his hit song “Not Like Us,” getting over 100 million streams on Spotify since it was released in May 2024. It was nominated for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Rap Song and Best Music Video.
“I think it’s very well-deserved,” junior Marshall Feldman commented. “I know I listened to that song on repeat when it came out.”
First-year Nicholas Sillo agreed with Feldman, stating that it was a “worthy song.”
Not every nominee got the same approval as Lamar. Taylor Swift, despite her many nominations, was not loved by all. Mortensen was surprised when she learned about her six nominations. “I mean, I’m not a huge Taylor Swift fan, really,” Mortensen said, “Six is a lot.”
“I think she makes good music,” Feldman said, “but it’s not really my taste, so I don’t really listen to her stuff.”
Not many had heard of Beyoncé’s song “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM”, which had also been nominated for Song of the Year. Not many students knew many of the artists that were nominated for Best New Artist, either, some of those being Benson Boone, Teddy Swims, Shaboozey and RAYE.
The event will take place on Feb. 2, 2025 at the Crypto.com arena in Los Angeles. It will be streamed on Paramount+ and broadcasted live on CBS.
