With coffee, bagels and pastries to start the morning, the film department hosted another guest speaker to talk with students.
The film department hosted its third and final event of the series with Florentine Films on Tuesday, Oct. 15 with guest speaker Lynne Carrión.
Carrión, a Keene State College class of 2018 alumna and assistant editor at Florentine Films of Walpole, N.H., focuses on post-production work. Carrión said she was excited when she was asked by the film department to come speak to students. When talking about post-production, she said she wanted to focus on her role as assistant editor, the processes it entails and her experience as a staff member of Florentine Films.
This final presentation was part of KSC’s inaugural Vincent Russell Visiting Scholar event fund. The $1 million fund was donated by Vincent D. Russell; according to the KSC website, Russell was a “1950 graduate, Army veteran, and one-time field director of the American Federation of Teachers.”
Film Department Chair Jo Dery added, “That is a new fund, donated by Vincent Russell, and every year that fund is going to move from department to department.”
“This year we hosted Ken [Burns] on Sept. 9 and in conjunction with that we thought it would be cool to bring in a few Florentine staff because we do have a lot of alumni that work there,” added Dery, “It’s always nice to connect current students with alumni.”
Junior Patrick Garcia said, “I was interested in learning more about the [film] industry.” Garcia, a film major, said that he has been involved with different aspects of media, yet is trying to refocus on film. He added he thought it was a very good talk.
“I learned a lot about the unions and the guilds and how those work, as well as the workflow as an editor since that is an interest of mine,” Garcia said.
Some students, like junior Tyler Desjardins, came to the talk as part of a collaborative production class. Desjardins said that aside from coming as a part of the class, he was “interested in editing, so I figured this would be a good way to learn more about the [film] industry as a whole.”
Desjardins added that he enjoyed the presentation, “There’s a real person talking about their job. We learn all this stuff in a class setting and actually hearing somebody that does this for a living, that’s sick.”
Carrión said she enjoyed coming back to campus as well, and said, “It feels crazy. I’m getting flashbacks of being on campus, going to parties and hanging out with my friends. It’s wild but amazing.”
