Election season is in full swing, not only with the presidential election looming ahead this November but also with individual state elections, including the decision of who will fill the candidacy for New Hampshire’s Second Congressional District.
So far, the race for the N.H. seat has narrowed since the primary election in September to Democratic candidate Maggie Goodlander and Republican candidate Lily Tang Williams. However, what exactly are these potential congresswomen’s future policies, and who will make the best match for the position come November?
As with the presidential candidates, the two N.H. representatives stand on morally opposing fields on hard-hitting topics this election season. To start, Lily Tang Williams’ official policy page expresses her desire to secure national borders, leave reproductive rights up to the states and repeal gun control laws, claiming strong support for a national constitutional carry law. An upfront stance on removing gun control while stressing the importance of securing border safety can certainly leave one wondering about which violent crimes matter the most to Williams’ campaign.
She also plans to support the economy by denying climate change, hoping to repeal energy restrictions, allowing a free market to thrive and unleashing true market competition through the removal of environmental laws.
Williams claims that our children and grandchildren will thank us for the decision to lower the national debt, while simultaneously claiming that promotable energy sources should not be a political fight. Many of these stances fall in line with Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s major talking points. It will surely appeal to right-wing voters across the state come November.
As for Maggie Goodlander, her policy page stands in direct opposition to Williams’. Her stance on climate change includes evidence of her fight against Big Oil and other harmful environmental factors with a direct reference to the launch of the first-ever Department of Environmental Justice, a project she helped launch. Her stance is for the planet and economy to thrive together.
It is clear that Goodlander promotes a passion for her policies throughout this page, providing experiences and methods used during her long career to back up her positions.
Goodlander’s stances include restoring market competition through the protection of small businesses and farmers, allowing unrestricted reproductive care to residents, making healthcare more affordable and modernizing state laws to fit the newfound adaptation of A.I. technology. Her policies attempt to appeal to all state voter demographics, even through these divisive electoral periods.
Both Williams and Goodlander make devoted promises for the people of N.H’s future in wildly different manners. The pair have amassed a strong following on either side of the ballot, meaning the election could be a close call. Make sure to get out and vote this season and cultivate both a state and home that aligns with the world you wish to live in.
