KSC media organizations joined together for lunch and lawn games at a cookout-themed event titled “Grillin’ and Chillin’” hosted by student-run radio station WKNH on Saturday, Sept. 7.
Art Collective and Media Productions joined WKNH for the event, with each organization setting up a table on the lawn of the L. P. Young Student Center. Cornhole and frisbee were available, along with catering from the Zorn Dining Commons including pizza, cookies and chips and dip.
Senior and WKNH Event Coordinator Ryan Stone said she wanted to connect the radio station with more people on campus.
“Over the summer, I was really, really motivated to do an event at the very beginning of the year to get us more members and to give people a look into what WKNH does other than just be a radio station,” Stone said.
Stone said she felt WKNH had a responsibility as a student organization with a visible campus presence to spotlight smaller organizations, with Art Collective and Media Productions being examples. “Grillin’ and Chillin’” followed the Student Involvement Fair on Sept. 6, where all three organizations also tabled.
“[Media Productions] has been trying to get new members and recruit people to be in their club and last year they had an okay turnout, but I’m really hoping that this year they can get more of that, and same with Art Collective,” Stone said. “There are so many ways that we can use that presence to help other organizations succeed, and one of those ways is … saying, ‘Hey, these guys are awesome too, check these guys out. WKNH is super cool, but so are these guys.”
Sophomore and Media Productions Treasurer Heather Gibb said the organization’s goal for the event was to recruit more members and get to know the campus community.
“Last year was the first time that Media Productions was starting to start up and grow again,” Gibb said. “[We are] still on the uptick of growing, but definitely a lot of people came in last year. We had a really great time at the involvement fair yesterday.”
Junior and Art Collective Vice President Grayce Wucik said the organization has wanted to collaborate with WKNH for some time. At the Art Collective table, Wucik and President Tyler Vose set up a fabric craft with leftover materials from the student involvement fair.
“We’re not being wasteful with what we have and if [attendees] didn’t get a chance to do it at all yesterday, they can come today also and make a little flag for a friend or whatever,” Wucik said.
Junior Erin Ciempa attended “Grillin’ and Chillin’” and said she found out about the event from a flyer she saw while at Friday night bingo.
“It’s a nice atmosphere and it’s cool to see people walking by and just being like, ‘What is this?’” Ciempa said.
Ciempa said events like “Grillin’ and Chillin’” were opportunities to connect with people she had seen around campus but never interacted with.
“I really like these events because it creates a sense of community,” Ciempa said. “You get to see a lot more people than when you normally just go to class.”
