It is no secret there is an attack on medical drugs and procedures mostly coming from the right wing of the political spectrum.
What is worse is that according to NBC, pharmaceutical industry experts warn that vaccines, birth control pills, hormone therapies and fertility drugs would be subject to new litigation if the Supreme Court endorses a challenge to the abortion pill Mifepristone.
On top of this, according to NBC, the Governor of Wyoming, Mark Gordon, signed a bill to ban gender-affirming care for minors. This makes Wyoming the latest state to ban medical care for transgender minors.
I find it so frustrating how stupid the culture war is with attempting to ban consensual and reversible medical procedures such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and puberty blockers for transgender children. With IVF people have been making the dumbest argument ever by saying embryos are human beings.
According to the American Civil Liberties Union, the Alabama Supreme Court even declared frozen embryos as people. It is always so refreshing to know that when I think politicians in the United States can not get dumber, I get proven wrong every time.
The attempted bans on puberty blockers for minors are also incredibly concerning. Puberty blockers are not only a reversible and consensual treatment for transgender children but also a treatment for cisgender children going through early puberty. It is clear the only reason there is an attack on puberty blockers at all is because there is an attack on transgender children. Certain politicians would rather have children suffer than allow them to choose which puberty they want to experience even though it is reversible.
The attacks on these procedures and drugs are mostly not coming from people who care about the health or bodily autonomy of others, but people who care about keeping power and maintaining the status quo. There is no genuine reason to ban these procedures as there is no effort to coerce people into them. It seems to me there are only attempts to ban procedures where people can give informed consent for something non-permanent and that is beyond problematic.
The attack on birth control is also worrying. Not only are some politicians going after abortion, but there is also an effort to target birth control pills as well. It is always ironic to me how anti-abortion people are also typically against birth control and gay marriage. Despite what anti-abortion people say there is no life taken during an abortion, however, a life can certainly be taken if an abortion is not given in some circumstances.
To me, bodily autonomy is the most important right we must fight to protect. This amazing right is under attack and we must do everything in our power to retain it and enshrine it forever. People have the right to do whatever they please to their bodies and should not have anything done to them that is not necessary if they do not want it. I will never understand how some people just do not get that.
