When walking on the pathway near Spaulding Gymnasium and the Media Arts Center, students may have noticed a giant hole and an excavator.
The hole, now filled, was the result of a leak in a condensate line of pipes underground, according to Bill Rymes, supervisor of plumbing and heating plant operations. The pipe is a part of the heating system of Keene State.
He said he is not entirely sure what caused the pipe to burst.
“There had been some other work done there a few years ago, and it may have been damaged then, and it just took the time to finally let go,” he said.
The plumbing team at KSC filled in the hole on April 10. Rymes said he found out about the problem a few days prior.
“We isolated it … And that made it safe,” he said.
The pipeline leads from different manholes to other manholes he said.
Rymes said something like this happens at least once a year.
Joe Britton, supervisor for grounds, said, “It does happen, especially in New England with underground steam lines that it’s just a fact of life.”
