Keene State sororities held events as part of Formal Recruitment Week Feb. 7 through Feb. 12, concluding with Bid Day.
Phi Sigma Sigma (Phi Sig) and Delta Phi Epsilon (DPhiE) handed out eight bids and now have eight new members. The Sorority Interest Group (S.I.G.), formerly Delta Xi Pi (DXP) sent out 19 bids and has one new member.
The four nights consisted of an open house, philanthropy night, community night and preference night. Corresponding with these nights, each sorority planned its own themed activities for the Potential New Members (PNM).
According to Phi Sig Membership Recruitment Chair Chloe Warner DeMond, Phi Sig’s theme was “love grows where Phi Sig grows”
“I had the PNM’s working with active sisters to create pieces of our letters, which we after recruitment, placed onto our letters,” Warner DeMond said. “We [also] had them decorating a puzzle piece like each of the letters of Phi Sigma Sigma with flowers.”
Warner DeMond said the letter decorating activity was to help the PNM’s feel more at home with the active sister and belong with the group.
“We did that because we wanted to really make sure that the PNM’s felt they were a part of something and give them that piece of us that we can’t actually give them, through this for them,” Warner DeMond said.
The PNM’s also made Valentine’s for the teachers of Wheelock Elementary in Keene.
“[The cards] were little cut out hearts that have encouraging words they can write on them and along with that, the org is using the money that we raised from the 5K to donate to the school or donate snacks,” Warner DeMond said.
DPhiE’s theme for recruitment was based on the Disney Television show Hannah Montana.
“The very first night was a low-key meet and greet, we had little conversation starters on the table shaped like guitars because [of] our theme,” DPhi E President Lauren Lindberg said.
Recruitment also included discussion of DPhi E’s philanthropies and activities such as friendship bracelet making, goal making and, “ Writ[ing] things that they love about themselves on a little piece of paper,” Lindberg said.
DPhi E’s recruitment also consisted of scrapbook making as the sorority, “Always make a scrapbook for each new class that comes in.” The PNM’s also gave each other paper butterflies to another member of the group based on the prompt given.
Although they are working on the process of becoming a new organization under the Panhellenic Council, S.I.G. still participated in recruitment week to gain more members.
“We stayed the same people in (DXP), now we’re just going through the process of becoming and hopefully having a Panhellenic org,” S.I.G. Recruitment Chair Iz Falcetti said.
S.I.G.’s theme for recruitment week was travel and activities consisted of activities such as bingo, game night, and discussion of group values and goals for the new Panhellenic organization.
“There [were] a lot of people going through recruitment and they’re all very sweet,” Falcetti said. “We’re very hopeful that we’ll get a lot of people.”
Falcetti said they hope students consider joining S.I.G. on their journey because it is a good opportunity to create something unique.
“Being part of the founding line, you get to be known to everyone that comes after you, which I think is really cool,” Falcetti said.
