Students were able to dance the night away under the sea during KSC Pride’s annual Pride Prom.
On Nov. 2, 2023, the pride club hosted the pride prom with the theme of “under the sea.” From 7:30 to 9:30 p.m, students were welcomed to enjoy the night by meeting new people, taking photographs, playing games, eating snacks and enjoying themselves.
Deirdre Noyce, a junior who has been a part of KSC Pride for two and a half years organized the event. Noyce said holding the pride prom is crucial considering, “It is important for queer students, or for students who tend to stand out in the crowd to have a safe space to be themselves.”
At the prom, students were welcomed with open arms no matter what they identify as or what they are wearing. They were able to be in a space where they felt they belonged.
In preparation for the prom, the club accesorized the Mabel Brown Room, with jellyfish decorations hanging from the ceiling, a decorative backdrop to take photos with friends, posters of sea creatures and blue shiny streamers hanging from the entrance.
KSC Pride holds many events throughout the school year to support and include people of the LGBTQ community and their allies. Some events they organize throughout the school year include a pride parade in the spring, little activities and weekly meetings. Laurel Feindel, a first-year student, said she decided to come to the event because, “It seemed like it was going to be a lot of fun.” She also said she is friends with a lot of the people who are a part of the club.
Wayne Kennell, a sophomore, went to the pride prom due to being a member of the KSC Pride club.
Lissa Saunders, a junior, became interested in the event when she noticed the big sign outside and decided to go, as it would be a good way to meet new people. Saunders said she enjoyed “seeing the decorations and the theme because they are really cute.”
