Over 60 possible employers and internship opportunities came to the recreation center in the Spaulding Gymnasium on Thursday, Sept. 28. Employers that were tabling were looking for student interns and workers. Students were there for various reasons including networking, experience, and many other reasons.
Students came in and started with a nametag. Some just had their names, but some had their name, year and major. Many students brought resumes as well. They were also given paperwork with information like what tables there were, what type of questions they may like to ask and much more. With so many tables, students were able to view a list prior to the event to get an idea of what to expect out of the employers.
Most tables were operated by companies in construction and safety. A handful of other tables were tabling careers in business management, architecture and other fields. With many opportunities for internships and careers, students of all years and majors could attend.
Some organizations tabling solely offered internship opportunities, with potential to end the internship with a career. This information was all posted to a PDF link on the Keene website for students to view as well.
Tables filled the rec center with company workers looking for students of all kinds. Looking through them were Cindy Dong and Sydney Szypzak, both juniors majoring in architecture. They were aware most tables were going to be aimed at safety and construction, but were still very interested. Szypzak said, “Hopefully we’re looking for some architectural design companies, but I know those are kind of sparse so we’re looking at construction management.”
“I’m hoping to really get my foot in the door. If I don’t get an internship or a job, which is what I’m really hoping for, I’m hoping to at least network and get my name out there,”Szypzak said,
Dong stated, “Just getting my name out there, and I want some more experience… If it goes well we’ll come back in the spring.”
Katherine Rosen, a junior majoring in business management and social media, was entering the event with a smile on her face. When asked what she hoped to get out of this event, she said, “I hope to work on my networking skills and possibly get a business internship opportunity.”
She explained she is taking a safety course this semester, which helped persuade her to come to the event.
“I would definitely be interested in that,” Rosen said when asked how she would feel in an internship outside of business as well.
Lucia Boatman was tabling for Sylvamo – a paper company. “We’re hoping to engage with students in the safety program; we’re looking for an internship opportunity.” Lucia was hopeful to find an intern, but when asked about job opportunities she said, “Right now, just internship, but you never know,” Boatman said.
