On Wednesday, Sept. 27 evening the Owls stepped out onto the Dr. Ron Butcher field and put away the Spartans in a 3-1 matchup. This is after Keene State competed on the road for the past three games, tying one against Western Connecticut and then winning against Eastern Connecticut and New England College; now after defeating Vermont State, they are on a three-game winning streak putting KSC at a record of 5-2-1, 2-0-1 LEC.
The Owls came out on Wednesday night wanting to win. They outplayed Castleton University possession of the ball for 58% of the first 45 minutes, according to KSC’s athletic website. The Owls started off by pressuring the goal right after the kickoff as three goals were shot in the first 10 minutes, two of which were stopped by Castleton’s goalie Soto-Burgos, and the other went wide.
For the most part, the Owls kept the ball in the midfield or near VTSU’s net. Occasionally Castleto able to steal the ball, but then the Owls would take it back. Despite this, the first goal wasn’t scored until 41 minutes into the game by senior and starter Mbambi Mbungu, who has scored a total of eight goals this season.
This helped the Owls build momentum for the second half and at minute 46:53 Mbungu scored with an assist by sophomore Elias Stowell-Aleman, and then eight minutes later Mbungu scored again leaving the scoreboard at 3-0 KSC.
VTSU ended with one shot on goal while KSC ended with a total of seven.
