Junior Irini Stefanakos achieved a huge milestone on September 9th, scoring her 100th career point against Worcester State. “I had no idea too until they announced it at the end of the game, So it was a good surprise” told Stefanakos. “It kind of just makes me want to do better moving forward and get even more points or get up there for assists or goals, you know?”
Being a captain as a junior it’s clear that she has both the coaches’ and team’s trust, from being a junior team captain and strong abilities on and off the field. “I’m very grateful that I was given that opportunity, and I hope that I’m doing a good job at showing them what I can do and how I can help them too,” said Stefanakos. Looking back at some of her accolades freshman year, Stefanakos started all 23 games for the Owls and led them in points, goals, assists, shots and shots on goal. Without naming them all, some of her achievements sophomore year included being named to both the All-Little East First Team and to the NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad. Along with that, her sophomore year she once again led the Owls in points, goals, assists, shots and shots on goal. The 100th point is just the start of a strong season for her, and everyone should keep their eyes peeled for what’s to come.
Field hockey doesn’t just stay at Keene for Stefanakos, over the summer she was able to coach at a summer camp “I would love to coach for sure. This past summer I did, I coached at a field hockey camp for little girls where I used to camp too. And the person who ran it was like, if you ever are looking for a job, feel free to reach out because she runs a club field hockey” Stefanakos explained.
She has been playing field hockey since 5th grade, she has many years under her belt. Her skills are something that she’s already been able to share with both her teammates and girls at summer camps. “Even if I don’t get a goal every game or anything like that, assists are just as important for me because sometimes you just get to be the playmaker and give those points to the other girls as well and make sure they’re getting in their work as well,” said Stefanakos.
