Now that Hurricane Lee is over, a very important question to ask is: can the intensity of these terrible storms be somehow prevented?
Climate change is perhaps the most pressing issue in the world, which is why it is such a shame that we are not doing enough to combat it. What is even more shameful is that there are still people who deny that the Earth’s temperature is rising at a very worrying rate and that humans are primarily responsible.
With our blatant disregard for the environment, it is no wonder why disastrous hurricanes can wreak havoc all over the world.
According to NASA, “Due to global warming, global climate models predict hurricanes will likely cause more intense rainfall and have an increased coastal flood risk due to higher storm surge caused by rising seas. Additionally, the global frequency of storms may decrease or remain unchanged, but hurricanes that form are more likely to become intense.”
It is horrifying that hurricanes will become more intense and sea levels will get higher and higher unless we collectively do something about it.
“We expect to see more hurricanes than we’ve seen in the last few decades. They should produce more rain and more wind,” Kerry Emmanuel, a professor emeritus of atmospheric science at MIT told Associated Press (AP). “I would say the bulk of the evidence, the weight of the evidence is that we’ll see more rain and more wind from these storms.”
Human-caused climate change is not a myth and anyone saying otherwise is just choosing to ignore facts.
According to NASA, “The greenhouse effect is essential to life on Earth, but human-made emissions in the atmosphere are trapping and slowing heat loss to space,” and, “While the Sun has played a role in past climate changes, the evidence shows the current warming cannot be explained by the Sun.”
These facts show it is obvious that our current climate crisis is not a natural event as some people mistakenly believe or just lie about.
NASA continues to explain how humans are involved in climate change, “Over the last century, burning of fossil fuels like coal and oil has increased the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). This increase happens because the coal or oil burning process combines carbon with oxygen in the air to make CO2.”
It is virtually impossible to deny the existence of global warming on scientific grounds. Many people in the Republican party would rather listen to fracking billionaires than actual scientists. For example the company PragerU receives donations from Farris and Dan Wilks who are billionaires in the fracking industry. PragerU hosts videos of right-wing perspectives including but not limited to climate change.
It is heartbreaking to see people be deceived by people who want to hoard money and power and not realize that they are praising those who will lead to their demise. Putting blind faith into anything you are told can lead to your downfall. Who will you listen to: those who have shown their dedication to sharing the truth or someone who pretends to care about your well being solely for their own financial benefit?
