Federal judge Matthew Kacsmaryk problematically ruled in a Texas district court to suspend the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) approval of the abortion pill Mifepristone.
Despite being seen as safe by scientists for multiple decades, someone who admits that he does not have any scientific experience has decided to claim that the pill is not safe.
The Equinox clearly sees that the concerns of safety are just a facade and that there is a need for control underneath this decision. Kacsmaryk’s decision is not one that has safety as its priority, but one that has definite political manipulations. The Equinox believes that it is outrageous that it is the decision of cisgender men that decide the fates of cisgender women and others who were assigned the female gender at birth. Bodily autonomy ought to be a right for everybody; only the owner of a body should be able to decide what they want to do with it.
It is quite baffling that the majority of anti-abortion sentiments come from those of religious backgrounds. The United States is not, has never been, and will never be a theocracy. The government has no place for religion. The Equinox sees that restricting abortion resources will only lead people into seeking unsafe ways to get an abortion, likely killing them. If Kacsmaryk really cared about safety, as he claims, then he should have no problem listening to scientists who say that Mifepristone is safe and has been for many years.
It is embarrassing for New Hampshire that the attorney general did not join the appeal for the pill. The Equinox is especially concerned about judicial overreach; judges are not legislators, they should not be making laws, they should only be enforcing them.
Having access to abortion resources is very important. Ever since Roe v. Wade was overturned, the treatment of reproductive health and bodily autonomy has gone downhill. The Equinox finds it exhausting to have to constantly fight to uphold rights for the people. Only one person should be able to decide what they do with their body, not a group of lawmakers that it ultimately does not affect.
The Equinox thinks that it is especially egregious that Kacsmaryk eliminated the safest way to receive an abortion in the name of safety. The irony of it all is just too cruel. We should not be living in a country where judges can blatantly lie to the citizens and have it be considered alright.
This is not the America we should settle for. The Equinox sees that it is frustrating, but necessary to keep up the fight to maintain dignity and rights for all. The way that the country is headed is scary, but there is still a glimmer of hope. If the common person will stand up for what is right, that hope will never die.
