Lizzo, a well-known rapper and singer, is also a skilled flutist. At the Washington D.C. stop on her “Special” tour, Lizzo played the crystal flute that once belonged to James Madison, the
fourth president of the U.S. She is the first person in history to play it according to an article in Rolling Stone.
The flute in question was gifted to James Madison by Claude Laurent of Paris to celebrate his second inauguration, and is one of only 20 artifacts the Library of Congress has from him. It is one of the few items saved by Dolley Madison from the fire at the White House.
Lizzo was honored by the chance the Library of Congress gave her, taking the time to say to her audience, “We just made history tonight! Thank you to the Library of Congress for preserving our history and making history freaking cool! History is freaking cool you guys.” Lizzo has since been invited to perform with the flute again at James Madison’s house.
Despite this, many grew outraged by this performance, considering her actions a mistake. Andrew McCarthy, former congressional candidate, tweeted, “Everyone involved in the decision to allow Lizzo to twerk while playing James Madison’s flute needs to be deported. I don’t care if they’re citizens. Deport them somewhere.”
It was an official decision by the Library of Congress to let her use it. The decision is backed by the fact that she holds a degree in classical music with a concentration in the flute from the University of Houston.
Lizzo is no stranger to negative reactions from the media including being targeted for her weight. Jenna Ellis, known for her work on Donald Trump’s legal team, claimed on record that Lizzo “is basically famous… for being one of the most morbidly obese people in the world.” Lizzo’s weight should have nothing to do with her talent, and she shouldn’t change her appearance to be able to play a flute.
The controversy even turns racist when political commentator Matt Walsh hypothesized that the agreement to let her use the flute was “a form of racial retribution.” The fact that superficial topics are being brought to the table for this argument, appalls me. All parties should move on. This situation shouldn’t be something people are getting worked up over. After all, as Lizzo herself said, “History is freaking cool, you guys.”
