The Keene State College campus received an email from Campus Safety informing the community that KSC senior Jacob Messersmith died on Mount Monadnock on Tues, Feb. 21.
The Union Leader is reporting Messersmith was found dead at approximately 1 p.m. on the white cross trail from what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Union Leader stated Mount Monadnock closed early Tuesday morning after authorities concluded a hiker had a firearm in his possession.
Fish and Game Lt. Craig Morrocco said a car remained in the parking lot from Monday evening. Morrocco said the hiker dismissed park rangers advice to turn around due to nightfall approaching.
The article stated Keene Police were searching for a KSC student from Alexandria, N.H., because of the student’s parents and roommates expressing concern.
Funeral and/or memorial arrangements will be announced as soon as they become available, Campus Safety stated in the address.
Counseling support services are available through the Keene State College Counseling Center.
