This week’s athlete of the week is Melanie Escalante of the Keene State College women’s track and field team.
The freshman from New Canaan, Conn. led the women at the New England Open Championships.

Escalante set a new KSC record in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:15.74. Escalante’s time advanced her to the meet’s 500-meter dash finals.
Escalante placed fifth overall at the championships with a time of 1:16.49 in the finals.
Escalante also received Little East Conference rookie track athlete of the week honor for her efforts.

The first runner-up this week is the KSC women’s basketball team’s senior captain, Courtney Cirillo.
Cirillo had a game-high 22 points in KSC’s LEC tournament semifinal game versus Southern Maine.
KSC lost the game 60-52, but was named the top seed in the ECAC tournament.
Additionally, the senior from Windsor Locks, Conn. led the team in assists and steals with five and four respectively.
Always a presence down low, Cirillo had five rebounds in the game as well.

The second runner-up this week is senior Kevin Hoyt of the men’s track and field team.
The senior distance runner from Newtown, Conn. led the men’s team at the New England Open Championships.
Hoyt ran the 5,000-meter run in 14:40.04, placing sixth overall.
Hoyt was the only male athlete to score for KSC at the New England Open Championships.
Hoyt was also named the LEC men’s track athlete of the week.
