As I have stated in earlier columns, politics is more than just an interest of mine. That being said, for those of you who know me, you know that I am a staunch Democrat and, although I don’t let ideology blind me from a good idea, I am proud of the Democratic Party tradition.
The Democratic Party, unlike its Republican counterpart, has played a vital role in our political structure essentially since the founding of our country. We are not only the party of Kennedy and FDR, but also the party of Jefferson, who founded the party in the idea of strict adherence to the Constitution. Over the years as our country has evolved, so has the Democratic Party, gaining new values and changing its image many times over the course of our history.
I personally believe that government should stand for the working people, not only the rich ones. In my opinion, our modern society was built on the backs of the middle and working class and they are now being hung out to dry.
I am a strong advocate of bringing American jobs home and creating incentives for American businesses to hire American workers, and not those who choose to send our jobs away to make a few extra dollars.
I believe that war is very rarely the answer and that our problems here at home should always come first; we should invest in our communities.
That being said, I am also opposed to wasteful spending and believe that the best way to do that is through prevention.
I strongly support equality and choice and feel that government should not be in the business of telling people what they can do with their bodies or in their bedrooms. These are the values I stand for, and although the Democratic Party does not always represent these values, they do a good chunk of the time.
Over the course of the year I will present my own take on current events and history and will always back up my statements with evidence and encourage readers to research my claims.
That being said this column will be filled with my take on matters and should not be regarded as absolute truth because, as you all know, there are usually at least two sides to every story.
I will be discussing the presidential primaries, what is going on in Congress, analyzing the actions of the Obama Administration, as well as many other current events.
Although I am a Democrat and thus tend to have a left-leaning bias, I want this article to represent politics as a whole, from the inspired to the absurd, and everything in-between. I don’t want my political leanings to define my writing, but allow my columns to open doors to new ideas and inspire readers to learn, think, and hopefully become engaged advocates for their beliefs.
If I am able to inspire at least one reader to become active and engaged in the political structure, whether they swing liberal or conservative, I will consider this article a grand success.
