Sometimes there’s nothing more exhilarating in a film than watching an epic battle scene. With guns, tanks, swords, or any other weapon blazing, the moral complications of the right and wrong side in the battle, and the perilous line between life and death our favorite characters are walking on. War films are some of the best examples of these situations, and there have been some spectacular films out there for those of you who crave the gore, the heartbreak, the thrilling scenes, and morality involved in some of cinema’s most epic adaptations of scenes from the front lines of war.
“Saving Private Ryan” is one of the best war films ever made. Steven Spielberg’s film is your classic World War II film. Tom Hanks stars as the heroic leader of a platoon who land on the beach of Normandy on D-Day. The opening scenes of the film are nothing short of brilliance. Spielberg makes great use of film sound when he depicts an explosion, and the camera movement and sound mimics the sensory experiences Hanks’ character goes through. Everything gets quiet, and we hear a distinct ringing sound. Hanks looks around, his vision blurred, but then becoming increasingly clearer as he grasps what just happened and the chaos still going on around him. This scene is pure perfection.
Another great war film is “Black Hawk Down.” A Ridley Scott film from 2001, “Black Hawk Down” chronicles the humanitarian effort in Mogadishu, Somalia when a warlord had taken the entire country hostage. The film isn’t a classic, but it is one of the most entertaining war films I’ve seen. What the film excels at is not focusing too much on the personal and emotional backgrounds of the soldiers or an overbearing anti-war or pro-war message. It does just not enough to provide emotional grounding for each character, but the film does not focus on an overwrought weepy romance (I’m looking at you, “Pearl Harbor”).
“Platoon” is another great war film. Done on the Vietnam War and directed by Oliver Stone, “Platoon” gets inside the psychology of being on the front lines of the Vietnam War, with Charlie Sheen playing the main character. Divided between an evil platoon leader and a good one, the film is not only a battle in terms of the war, it becomes a battle for Charlie Sheen’s character’s soul. This was definitely a brilliant film, fueled by great performances.
“Apocalypse Now” was directed by Francis Ford Coppola and stands as another staggering achievement in the war film genre. Coppola reportedly went extremely over budget with this film and had to deal with the extremely obstinate and overweight Marlon Brando, but the film is another great depiction of the Vietnam War. A loose adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness,” this film focuses on the journey into the jungle to recover Colonel Kurtz, a military man gone rogue, but it becomes a journey into the soul of the man set on this quest.
There’s something about the heroics and psychology involved in warfare that attract me to these films, and they are very far from boring, sprawling historical films that never seem to end. The battle scenes provide some serious excitement, but the films also offer some important political or social messages that provide some context as to why these stories are important. These war films offer a window into eras long gone, and they bring our history textbooks alive in an authentic and exhilarating way.
