After some debate among faculty, the Keene State College Senate majority passed a strategic initiative that will make a four-year degree accessible to all KSC students, at the Senate’s Wed., April 20 session.

Amended from the Senate’s previous consensus, mandating that the total credits required for any KSC major could not exceed 120 credits, the approved strategy seeks to provide more options for credit-heavy majors. According to the proposal, submitted by the Academic Standards Committee (ASC) to the Senate, the strategy would allow departments to either require 120 credits in order to complete a degree or create a 52-credit program specific to their major.

The leeway granted to departments concerned about having to cut too many courses will come from requested reduction of the ISP curriculum from 44 to 40 credits.

Senator and English Professor William Doreski said the proposal still lacked important supporting data. “We still haven’t seen any evidence that credit load requirement has any bearing on graduation rates,” Doreski said. The policy’s initiative was born after the Board of Trustees chancellor reported the lagging graduating rates at KSC in the recent years.

Senator and History Professor Graham Warder motioned to make the proposal’s choice a blanket requirement, forcing all departments to create 52-credit program or fewer and require a maximum of only 120 credits to graduate. The motion was not passed.

After several more unsuccessful motions to amend the proposal’s language, a motion was made to close debate on the subject, bringing the delegation to a vote. The Senate approved the proposed initiative with a majority vote.

This proposal will go before the ISP Council by Nov. 1 in order to gain full Senate approval by Dec. 2011. The process is anticipated to be complete by Spring 2013.

A report on the Athletic Training program by Senator and Chemistry Professor William Blatchly was also passed into Senate minutes. While the nationally accredited program has consistently provided KSC students the opportunity for hands-on clinical and practical training, Blatchly said the program still faces several challenges. He reported space issues regarding training equipment and a dearth of faculty for the number of students admitted to the program.

Blatchly recommended an expansion of clinical placements to increase student exposure to maximum contact sports. He also advised the department create a more distinct line between program work load and self-pursued study.

The Senate also voted to accept academic calendars, presented by Senator and Assistant Professor of Physical Education Wanda Swiger, for academic years from 2012-2015.

As the last Senate session of the 2010-2011 academic year, Provost for Academic Affairs Emile Netzhammer closed the meeting by introducing new business to be discussed during future Senate meetings, regarding the college’s policy on course overload. Netzhammer voiced concern that the current policy, which allows students to sign up for up to five courses, has become more of a safety net as student can drop a course within the first weeks of classes and still retain full-time status. “This will be brought back to the Senate next fall and I didn’t want there to be any surprises,” Netzhammer said.
