Parking 101 at KSC

This week’s flavor…none other than parking.

It’s 7:50 a.m. and if you leave your house right now, there is a shot you will be able to run to your class without being marked late.

Now it’s 7:55 and you arrive at the commuter parking lot on campus and try to hurry and find a spot, except you notice five other people trying to do the exact same thing. Now it’s 7:57 and you start to panic that you’re going to be late to class. You compare the search to find a parking spot in the commuter lot to finding one at the mall right before Christmas.

Now it’s 8:00 and you’re for sure going to be late so you decide to make your own spot and hope that Campus Safety won’t notice your car. When you arrive at class you’re confident that everything’s okay, and you stop thinking about your car until you start walking back to it while enjoying a conversation with your friend and then it’s gone.  They towed you, and you feel like you lost something and you don’t know where it is.

You think you could be towed, so you call Campus Safety and they confirm this is true. You immediately think, “How am I going to come up with $100 when I am a poor college student?” You freak out for a little, and then you get your “baby” back. At least now you know you can’t get away with this anymore.

Sound familiar? Sad to say, but I am sure a good percentage of our campus can say this has happened to them.  It doesn’t matter how upset you are, or if you argue your way over, in the end, you still have to pay for your tow and that nice little present on your windshield for $40. But we have to ask ourselves if this is happening to so many of us are WE really the problem? I think a lot  of students would answer no, the parking is. For some reason at the beginning of the year KSC decides to have a member of Campus Safety stand outside from 8-12 and check everyone’s parking sticker, and if you do not have the proper sticker then you can’t get through. The situation is very similar to the story “Three Billy Goats Gruff” when the troll does not let anyone cross the bridge.

What is really funny though is you can easily get in the commuter lot through the back way by the Holloway dorms and through the back way by the Science Center.

This year I saw a Campus Safety guard watch a student try to sneak in and radio someone to dispense a ticket for the car without a pass. Why would he do this? Was he this bored? The poor college kid was just probably trying to get a snack from Hoot-n-Scoot. But even if you have a commuter pass there aren’t enough spots to hold all of us, so why do they sell so many? Do they really expect us to park in the Winchester lot and not be late for class? We might as well save ourselves $150 and park at Wal-Mart for free.

All I am saying is there needs to be an alternative parking lot in the near future because the number of incoming students will only increase, and pretty soon fighting over spots before class could turn into some serious drama. If we could take Winchester lot and put it closer to campus this would be great, but it doesn’t seem realistic. How long are we going to continue parking at our friends’ houses before we eventually get towed there? We need to make a change.

Something tells me that you’re not on campus before eight. Ever.

I realize that because you have an opinion column that you’re allowed to make claims without stating your sources but what you’re saying here is just inaccurate, and all of us who make it to campus by eight (by 9, in fact) know that there are plenty spots to go around at that time.

You’ve completely missed the point of the parking problems at Keene State.

This column keeps getting worse by the week. Please understand, this is a student newspaper, not Seventeen Magazine.

I hope that you will correct your mistakes and that another reporter is able to write a comprehensive story that illuminates this issue.

  21. Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  22. Hi, I really like your weblog. Is there something I can do to obtain updates like a subscription or some thing? I am sorry I am not acquainted with RSS?

  25. This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
